SDPI's undeclared hartal turns violent
In an undeclared hartal called by Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) over Katuva incident, four policemen and an activist of SDPI suffered minor injuries after a clash erupted between the hartal supporters and policemen in front of police station here on Monday. Police also took more than 100 SDPI activists into preventive custody. In the undeclared hartal called through social media, the activists of SDPI, the political offshoot of the controversial Popular Front of India (PFI), blocked the vehicle movement and forcibly closed shops and offices in many places in the State especially in Malabar region. Violent incidents were reported at many places in connection with the hartal.
Police said 11 SDPI activists were arrested and brought to the police station in connection with the hartal violence at 1000 hrs. Later a group of hartal supporters barged into the station leading to the skirmish between the police and agitators. Then, police used lathicharge to disperse the agitators. In the melee, four policemen and one SDPI activist suffered minor injuries and they have been admitted to Kannur district hospital.
Police also took more than 100 hartal supporters under preventive custody from various places --Kannur (40), Thalassery (15), Taliparamba (5), Edakkad (10), Kannapuram (10), Panoor (6), Chakkarakkal (6), Muzhakkunnu (5) and Mayyil (8).
Meanwhile, BJP district President P Sathya Prakash said the undeclared hartal by anti -ocials shows the inefficiency of the State Police Department and the Government, surrendering before the extremists organization.
In the name of Katuva incident, both the LDF and UDF in Kerala are supporting the hartal by the extremists, he alleged. He also demanded immediate arrest of culprits involved in the crime.
